Bilín Wake indicates new work from Mark Trecka (Pillars and Tongues, Dark Dark Dark) in collaboration with Evan Hydzik (Pillars and Tongues) and others, deliberately abstract so as to present sound as androgynous and so as to explore tensions between sound as extra-musical and as musical, as hypnogogic and as cinematic, as discomforting and as soothing.
First cassette release, 'Wake Country' available now on Bluesanct / Orphanology.
artist statement for 'Wake Country':
With this work which has become a release called Wake Country, I at first attempted to set out entirely alone, to drive something entirely free of collaborative effort. Before even really starting out, I was blessed to discover, as I do again and again, that I am more or less inescapably surrounded by the energy of collaborative creation.
The process, nevertheless, took a novel form of collaboration -- Evan Hydzik first supplied me with source material which I manipulated to created many discreet works, beginning on the summer solstice and continuing into early fall. I in turn supplied him with source material which he then manipulated in an analogous fashion. We reviewed and finished the work together, though I take ownership of the imagery, titles, accompanying texts and, at least privately although perhaps cosmically, some overarching themes and concepts. I have often worked as a singer, but in this instance, I have almost entirely omitted my voice as a recognizable element. Among the reasons for this is -- although Evan and I are both men and both identify as men -- I have attempted at least to allow for the possibility of androgyny. That is to say, in all I do, I look to both the masculine and feminine aspects of my soul, I look to the feminine and masculine in everything to source my work. With this particular work, in omitting my most audibly masculine aspect, I hope to create a space in which the feminine can articulate itself more fully.
In addition to this somewhat esoteric line of thinking, I would also note that most of the music which drives me and influences me is, in fact, made by women. So it is not simply a yearning towards alchemical balance which informs this thinking, but a very real, everyday experience that I have attempted to acknowledge.
Thank you to Evan for his efforts and thank you to my dear friends and serial collaborators Beth Remis and Ben Babbitt who I am sure feature confusedly in some of the source materials somewhere. Thank you also to Michael Anderson, whose work continues to influence and inspire me and through whose efforts you now hold this in your hand or in your heart.
Although I am always most happy to allow my work to speak for itself, I am nearly just as happy to talk about this material and if anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask.
